What is GST?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax levied on every value addition in India. Introduced on July 1, 2017, GST replaced a multitude of indirect taxes (like VAT, excise duty, service tax, and octroi) to unify India into a single national market under the motto "One Nation, One Tax."

GST is structured into different tax slabs—primarily 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%—depending on the nature of the good or service. Essential items like unpackaged food grains are exempt (0%), while luxury and sin goods attract the highest slab of 28% plus an additional cess.

How is GST Calculated? (The Formulas)

Calculating GST involves basic arithmetic, but the formula changes depending on whether you are adding tax on top of a net price (Exclusive) or extracting the base price from a final billed amount (Inclusive).

1. Adding GST (Exclusive to Inclusive)

If a product's base price is ₹1,000 and the GST rate is 18%, you need to calculate the tax amount and add it to the base price.

GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100)
Total Amount = Base Price + GST Amount

Example: GST = 1000 × (18/100) = ₹180. Total Invoice = 1000 + 180 = ₹1,180.

2. Removing GST (Inclusive to Exclusive)

If a product sells for ₹1,180 and you know it includes 18% GST, you must perform a reverse calculation to find the original base price.

Base Price = Total Amount / [1 + (GST Rate / 100)]
GST Amount = Total Amount - Base Price

Example: Base Price = 1180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000. GST = 1180 - 1000 = ₹180.

Understanding CGST, SGST, and IGST

Because India is a federal republic, the GST collected is shared between the Central and State governments. This is managed through three components:

  • CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax): The portion of tax collected by the Central Government on an intra-state sale (e.g., a sale happening entirely within Maharashtra).
  • SGST (State Goods and Services Tax): The portion of tax collected by the State Government on an intra-state sale. Note: If the total GST rate is 18%, it is split exactly in half: 9% CGST and 9% SGST.
  • IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax): The tax collected by the Central Government on an inter-state sale (e.g., a sale from Maharashtra to Gujarat). The IGST rate is the full GST rate (e.g., 18%). The Central government later distributes the state's share to the destination state.

Our calculator automatically divides the tax into CGST and SGST on the invoice schedule to assist with standard local billing requirements.

Comprehensive FAQ (26 Advanced Questions)

1. What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect, consumption-based tax applied to the supply of goods and services in India, replacing multiple previous taxes.

2. What does 'Add GST' mean?

It means your entered amount is the 'Base Price' (Exclusive of tax). The calculator calculates the tax amount and adds it to create the final total.

3. What does 'Remove GST' mean?

It means your entered amount is the 'Total Billed Amount' (Inclusive of tax). The calculator extracts the tax hidden inside it to reveal the original base price.

4. Why can't I just subtract 18% from the total to remove GST?

Because math doesn't work that way. If base is 100 + 18% GST = 118. If you subtract 18% of 118 (21.24), you get 96.76, not 100. You must use the reverse formula: Total / 1.18.

5. What are the standard GST slabs?

The Indian government has categorized items into 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% slabs. Essential items are at 0% (exempt).

6. What is CGST?

Central GST. It is the Central Government's half of the tax collected on transactions occurring within a single state.

7. What is SGST?

State GST. It is the State Government's half of the tax collected on intra-state transactions.

8. What is IGST?

Integrated GST. It is applied to inter-state sales (between two different states) and is collected entirely by the Center before being distributed.

9. Should I charge IGST or CGST/SGST?

If the buyer is in the same state as your registered business, charge CGST + SGST. If the buyer is in a different state, charge IGST.

10. Do I need to register for GST?

Registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds ₹40 Lakhs for goods (₹20 Lakhs in some states) or ₹20 Lakhs for services.

11. Can I charge GST without a GSTIN?

No. It is illegal to collect GST from customers if you do not have a valid GST Identification Number (GSTIN).

12. What is Input Tax Credit (ITC)?

ITC allows businesses to reduce the tax they have already paid on purchases (inputs) from the tax they collect on sales (outputs), preventing double taxation.

13. Does this calculator support international taxes like VAT?

Yes, the mathematics of adding/removing percentages is identical worldwide. You can input any custom tax rate (like 20% for UK VAT) in the custom field.

14. What items are taxed at 28%?

Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco products, aerated drinks, and betting/gambling services generally fall under the highest 28% slab.

15. What items are taxed at 5%?

Household necessities like edible oil, sugar, spices, tea, coffee, and life-saving drugs generally fall under the 5% slab.

16. What is the 3% GST rate for?

A special 3% GST rate is applicable primarily on gold, silver, and other precious metals and jewelry.

17. Is GST calculated on the discounted price or MRP?

GST is calculated on the actual transaction value (the price paid by the customer). If a discount is applied before the sale, GST is calculated on the discounted price.

18. What is GST Cess?

A compensation cess is levied on top of the 28% GST for certain demirit or luxury goods (like cars and tobacco) to compensate states for revenue loss.

19. How accurate is this calculator?

The calculator uses exact mathematical precision for inclusive and exclusive formulas, rounding to two decimal places as per standard accounting practices.

20. What is a GST Invoice?

A bill issued by a registered dealer that clearly states the GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, base price, CGST, SGST, IGST amounts, and the total value.

21. Can I use this tool to calculate TDS?

No, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is an income tax mechanism. You can use this calculator's custom rate to subtract a percentage, but we recommend our dedicated Income Tax tool.

22. What happens if I charge the wrong GST rate?

You may face penalties from the tax department, or you will have to issue debit/credit notes to your clients to rectify the invoice amount.

23. What are HSN and SAC codes?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is used for classifying goods. SAC (Services Accounting Code) is used for classifying services. They determine the GST rate.

24. Does the calculator work offline?

Because the tool relies on client-side JavaScript, once the page is fully loaded in your browser, you can calculate GST without an active internet connection.

25. Are software services taxed?

Yes, SaaS (Software as a Service) and general IT services provided within India are generally taxed at a flat 18% GST rate.

26. Can I export the invoice calculation?

Yes, the SJ480 calculator allows you to export the detailed CGST/SGST table breakdown directly to Excel or Word for your records.
